Adding more lanes for traffic isn’t going to reduce congestion.

Induced demand is a phenomenon that occurs when the supply of a certain good or service increases, which in turn leads to an increase in demand for that same good or service. In terms of traffic patterns, induced demand refers to the idea that if the capacity of roads and other transportation infrastructure is increased, then more people are likely to use it. This additional usage often results in traffic congestion, as well as more pollution from cars and buses being on the road. In order to reduce this unintended consequence, communities need to take a holistic approach to improving their transportation systems by looking at multiple factors such as public transportation options, bike lanes, and land use planning.
